Tangible Typography / Workshops

Tangible Typography
Typographic installations made with everyday objects
This workshop was  facilitated as a part of Typoday 2015. I was invited to work with students to create large typographic installations. The students were give different materials to work with - Fabric, 'Cutting' Chai glasses, Biscuit packs etc. All
these were to be the type-blocks for building the installation. The participants had an intense discussion about the materials,
the city and the local languages spoken here. They also tried to get a sense of the material: Was it flowy? Could it be stacked
or arranged? What was the colour? Could the material be used to capture the essence of a word / message?

The first two groups used pixelations as a method for creating a font with glasses and biscuits, While the other two had
to explore space and write a word with fabric. The results were quite interesting.

A quick presentation with images and references that give the participants some hints, some ideas and a thought to begin the workshop with.

Pick one, to find out which material you are working with.

________

______
Using a graph and photos to make quick scribbles in order to plan out the proportions of the installation.

Pradnya Naik - is a typeface designer, she stepped in briefly to guide the students in the early stages of the workshop.
The neon pink fabric was extremely flashy, hence the students made a connection with Neon signs across a metro city.
And they decided to pick words from the 'Mumbaiyya - Hindi' lingo as an inspiration to create their typographic installations.

Giant stitched typography!
The word spelt here is 'Abey' in english it literally means 'Hey...' Feel free to add anything after this exclamation.
This group created the word 'Item' by hanging the fabric - in the Mumbai slang 'Item'  means Hot Chick!

These coasters was used for the installation made with tea glasses - along with biscuits spelling the word 'Gup - Shup', which means chit chat in Hindi.
The installation getting deconstructed slowly when people come and pick a glass of tea and a pack of biscuits - until nothing is left.
